Jump ring question

Hi,

I'm new here and very new to beading. I took a class recently, and then went home and ordered a ton of supplies off firemountaingems.com including jump rings. I bought one package of stainless steel 6.5 mm 18 gauge, and one of brass that was 20 gauge. I can open and close the brass ones easily, just as I was shown in class, but I cannot pry apart a single one of the stainless steel ones. I double-checked and I did not order ones that were made to be sodered. Is stainless steel just harder to manipulate than brass? What is silvery-colored and more flexible? Any advice?

Thanks!
